Expectations exceeded

Before a series starts, I usually keep my expectations low, so I won’t be too disappointed if it isn’t good. When “The Edge of Horizon“ was announced. I did expect something special, though, and for two reasons. First, I like BL series in lakorn style, and second I’ve loved Ongsa Theethuch for his fine acting as a lead in “The Cursed Love“. My expectations were exceeded, as “Horizon“ turned out to be one of the best Thai BL series ever made, keeping me glued to the screen from the first to the last minute.

In contrast to most lakorns, which are usually fictitious, albeit with many subtle allusions to historical or recent political and social events, “Horizon“ depicts the revolution of 1932, which put an end to feudal Siam and was the foundation of modern Thailand. The military coup executed by the Khana Ratsadon Party went largely without bloodshed, whereas the rebellion of a minority of royals and military units, led by Prince Borowadet, almost took on the dimension of civil war.

The plot of “Horizon“ displays the political turmoil using the example of the noble Varakulvatin family, whose patriarch, Prince Vasin (Chai Chatayodom) obviously represents Borowadet. While the historical storyline quite accurately relates the events leading to the 1932 revolution, the revolution itself, and the 1933 rebellion, the BL plot revolves around the love of Prince Tinnakorn Varakulvatin (Ongsa Theethuch) and his childhood friend, servant Phob Manghongphak (Inn Jakkrasin).

The writing of this series is fantastic, because it succeeds in having many social groups of the 1932 Siam represented by characters, who all play important parts in the development of the story. So instead of retelling the whole story, I’ll focus on the characters and the social groups they stand for.

This is one of the most powerful series I've ever watched in the genre. The writing and direction were perfect and the actors were at the top of their game. You can easily get immersed into this drama and feel that they are real people. This was a 10/10 and should be on everyone's watch list.
I won't give away any spoilers, but the background is that this is a historical fiction period-piece. It opens in the early 1900's when a prince and his servant (around the same age) were best of friends as kids. It flashes forward to their late teens when they fall in love. When their relationship is discovered, royal duties force them apart. It jumps ahead several years later and the meet again. That is when the story really unfolds, but I won't say any more about what happens to the characters, you'll have to watch it.
It is set against the backdrop of a real historical event that happened in their country in 1932, while many of the events mirror closely what happened, this story is told from the viewpoint of a fictional family, but it very closely follows the timeline of real events.

This is 11 parts. At the end of the first ten parts they show scenes from the next episode; at the end of part 11 they have a bonus scene, so be sure to stick around to watch that. You will not be disappointed with this series.
