Walk Run Cha-Cha

(Chi)Paul Cao and his wife Millie are quite accomplished cha-cha dancers whom we watch here as they rehearse and perform - all set against a backdrop of the story of their post-war flight from Vietnam. Most of what we learn is garnered by way of an extended family dinner in which joy abounds but during which both recall how he made it to the United States first and then had to strive to ensure that she could follow - even though they hadn't known each other for that long by this point. Both were certain that this was true love, and as we watch them dance at the conclusion we see that they were right. This isn't really a documentary though; it's more of a few snippets from a video diary that very much focusses on their contented lives now rather than dwell on that long over, and as is often the case with films about those who suffered from wartime deprivations, the subjects have no intention of reliving these frightening experiences for the camera or anyone else, but are much more intent on demonstrating that they are enjoying the lives and families that they have now - and that any suffering is firmly in the past where they want it to remain.
