Life in an Argentine prison during the country’s infamous Dirty War might seem like an odd backdrop for a movie musical. But, given the engaging source material on which this film is based – the 1992 Tony Award-winning hit Broadway musical featuring the compositions of John Kander and Fred Ebb (best known for their work on Cabaret) and the acclaimed 1976 novel by author Manuel Puig – this exuberant, visually involving new release succeeds in telling a captivating tale of unlikely friendship and romance between two very different cellmates during a troubled time in the Latin American nation’s history. At first glance, impassioned but perpetually embittered political dissident Valentin Arregui (Diego Luna) seems like the last person who would befriend someone like Luis Molina (Tonatiuh), a shallow, flamboyant gay window dresser who has been sentenced to eight years behind bars for corrupting a minor. Valentin is compulsively committed to his cause as if it were an inescapable crusade. However, thanks to Molina’s irrepressible wit and charm, he manages to win over his relentlessly serious cellmate. He accomplishes this through his gift for articulate, mesmerizing storytelling, specifically his intricate account of a classic 1950s B-movie musical called “Kiss of the Spider Woman.” Luis cheerfully recounts the film in an apparently sincere attempt to help Valentin forget his troubles. This movie within a movie is thus brought to life through vivid re-creations of Molina’s meticulously detailed descriptions of this campy melodrama, one whose plot in some ways parallels aspects of the real world storyline of the two prisoners. It tells the tale of a love triangle of sorts involving two men (Luna and Tonatiuh in dual roles) vying for the affections of a sophisticated but lovelorn heroine (Jennifer Lopez) while they simultaneously fend off the diabolical advances of a vampish supernatural villain, the Spider Woman (also portrayed by Lopez). Luis spins a compelling yarn that...

It’s taken me hours to write my review for this but I still don’t think I can put all my thoughts and feelings into words properly, but this was genuinely nothing short of a masterpiece. The contrast going from the dark, cruel prison to the lively, bright technicolor world of Kiss of the Spider Woman is so striking, both visually and metaphorically, it really does feel like 2 completely separate worlds.

The performances from the three leads (Tonatiuh, Diego Luna, Jennifer Lopez) were so incredible and nuanced, easily some of my the best performances I’ve ever seen. And the chemistry between Tonatiuh and Diego is so raw and leaves such a bittersweet feeling because you can feel their love for each other through the screen (even when they weren’t admitting it to each other) but you know ultimately they won’t get the beautiful, happy ending they deserve. By the end of the film I was in tears and almost in hysterics, and the final shot and line broke me and healed me at the same time.

Now I have to talk about what everyone’s talking about, Jennifer Lopez. We all know she’s an icon and talented performer and actor (even if you won’t admit it to yourself) but she’s on another level in this role, she fully turned into the character(s) of Aurora/Ingrid Luna/Spider Woman. She deserves every bit of praise she’s been getting and then some.

I know it probably won’t, but this movie truly deserves to sweep this awards season. Not only is it one of the greatest films of the decade, it’s a bold, audacious statement that’s so important in to share in these bleak times around the world. I adore everything about this movie and I better see both Tonatiuh and Jennifer Lopez get Oscar nominations otherwise I’m gonna get violent! Everyone needs to go see this movie on the big screen as soon as possible, it seriously is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen in my entire life and my personal movie of the year.

When "Molina" (Tonatiuh) is marched into his cell in 1980s Argentina, he is introduced to a cellmate who couldn't care less about his peccadilloes. "Arregui" (Diego Luna) just wants to be left in peace to read his books and not to be disturbed by the flamboyance of his obviously gay roomie - or his beaded bed curtain. The persistent "Molina" isn't about to be ignored, though, and after a degree of attrition finally manages to engage his new friend with a story of the "Spider Woman" - a movie made many years earlier and featuring the legendary "La Luna". Now mingling their grim real life existence in prison with the opulent one described by this enthusiastic narrator, "Molina" takes his friend on a romantic adventure that sees the pair begin to understand each other better, and there is even a degree of inter-reliance developing as we also learn that neither man is entirely as we have thus far been led to believe. The fiction that is intriguing "Arregui" is a love triangle between the young "Kendall" (Tonatiuh), "Armando" (Luna) and the object of their mutual affection - "Aurora" (Jennifer Lopez). Which man does she love, and more importantly, whom will be sacrificed to the "Spider Woman" (also Lopez) to appease an ancient curse? Though there is certainly a lot of theatricality about the look of this film, I felt the pacing was really quite effective and the effort from Tonatiuh really engaging. He brings something of the vulnerable to his character, but also something of the resilient too as we appreciate just how devious their captors were. I'm not sure if Bill Condon intended Lopez to appear quite so disjointed from the rest of the production, and that doesn't always work, but her rendition of the powerful title song tops off a sequence of musical numbers that aren't perhaps so memorable, but they are quite poignant and often a little flirtatious too as they build to a conclusion that cannot but be tragic on both plains of the plot. I could have done with more fro...
