THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING is a witty, dark, wonderfully unformulaic neo-Western with a bluegrass soundtrack that will have you grinning, razor-sharp editing, gorgeous sun-soaked wide shots, and a beekeeping backdrop that's as daring as it is beautiful. Matthew McConaughey's long-awaited return to leading-man duty is pure joy, and Angelina LookingGlass is a genuine discovery. The warm community heart of the first half is the film at its best, and while the darker second half left me a little mixed, I enjoyed this far more than enough.
